Building X on the campus of Windesheim University of Applied Sciences in Zwolle has been named Building of the Year 2011. After having won the Eastern region award, the national jury also named it the ultimate building of 2011 for the whole of the country.

The Royal Association of Dutch Architects organises this award for the sixth time this year. First, buildings are nominated and winners named in the five different regions. The nominees then vie for the national title. Here are some quotes from the favourable jury report:

“A total of 265 entries vied for the top title, a figure that barely betrays to what extent new developments have stagnated over the last couple of years”, “The jury was amazed by the high quality of the nominations”, “The building visit is what sets the BNA selection apart from other architectural awards and coffee table books. It isn’t the picture that counts, it’s the building itself: the way it functions, the materials and details, how the different rooms are experienced and the place of the building in its surroundings”, “Despite a great deal of appreciation for all of the five nominees, it didn’t take us long to appoint the winner. According to the jury, the winner stands out because of excellent workmanship, with extreme performances on all levels and the obvious enjoyment of its users.”, “This School of Journalism and Economics is one magnificent school, for students and lecturers, for users and passers-by.”

During the past few years, Broekbakema won four regional awards. In 2007 with Corlaer College in Nijkerk for the Eastern region and with Office Pavilion TGM in Asten for the Southern region. In 2008 with Twents Carmel College De Thij in Oldenzaal for the Eastern region. And last year with the Research Campus Chemelot Porter’s Lodge 140 DSM Geleen for the Southern region. For Broekbakema, this first prize is an extra boost, as it also shows that they did well by securing Aldo Vos and Siebold Nijenhuis, two ‘eager men full of powerful plans’, as partners. Broekbakema celebrates!
