‘fleg daikanyama’ 2005 (photo: shigeo ogawa) the japanese architecture studio A.A.E. is lead by taketo shimohigoshi, who founded the firm in 1997. on the 10th
anniversary of the studio, they won an architectural review award for emerging architecture, for their
‘fleg daikanyama’ installation. the studio was kind enough to send us some images of some of their other recent
projects, which include a private residence and a commercial building.

zaimokuza house

zaimokuza house is a small private residence in kamakura city, japan. to maximize the amount of space on the
interior of the house, the studio designed it with no load-bearing walls on the interior. this feature allowed the
space to be as open as possible filling it with light. the centre of the house features a gray-coloured glass
wall that continues to allow light to circulate.

fleg daikanyama

this commercial and residential building features two large walls that create a private courtyard in front by
blocking the view around it. beams were added with green moss planted within them buffering the residential
space above from the commercial space below. the beams add life to the space, changing with the weather
patterns, while adding green to the viewpoint from the residences.

placed on an irregular-shaped corner lot, this building was designed to emphasize its boundary restrictions.
the building also focuses on large openings in the facade which link the outside and interior. coloured stainless
steel cladding allows it to also reflect the lighting and environment surrounding it.
