Although designed as a house for a single family, No. 19 Jalan Elok is effectively a small community center where neighbors walk in freely for food, merriment, and company.
Stairs with open risers and slits in treads intended for air movements as well as visual reference at different heights of the space. Rest rooms are ‘externalized’ sheltered spaces for optimum cross-ventilations and day lighting. One feels completely in the outdoor but with a sense of privacy.
Spatial relationships – an internal space ‘externalised’ but the reverse takes place for the other.
This house is conceived as a three-dimensional landscape installation whereby pockets of spaces float within, culminating at the living room with a landscaped backdrop. The existing rear retaining wall has been utilized as a feature waterfall.
Jury Citation:
This work is an embodiment of a house as a reflection of the changes in time: at how architects can look at things, at how clients live their lives. It is an expression of the shift in perspective from previous decades; a way of life, a new way of looking at things, an eco view, living life with a green wall; an architect as seeing eye to eye with clients; an architect is bold enough to meet demands of the client and the times.
The SIA Design Award jury found the son’s room as an expression of the son’s life, where watching the sky can be enjoyable; while the daughter’s room with no openings, still opens the imagination through a blank surface where black and white movies can be projected. The kitchen is discovered as a revolutionary space by questioning the norms of the relationship of the inside and outside; by pursuing the relationship to street as a fantastic means to restore a missing social interaction in the new age. The house has magical quality of its spaces, where the residents can hear birds sing, see squirrels run, and enjoy the emergence of a little rainbow in their living spaces.
